New Border Pass Regulations to take Effect in 2001

The Beijing Public Security Bureau has formulated new regulations for the management of border passes for border control areas, which will become effective starting on January 1, 2001.

An official said that the new regulations were drafted in accordance with the state's regulations, and once the new regulations take effect, the old ones will become invalid.

China began to issue border passes for people going into border control areas in 1975. However, with the rapid development of the country's political and economic situation, the old regulations no longer suit the needs of the new situation.

The official said that the new regulations simplify the procedures for applying for the pass, and non-permanent Beijing residents can also apply for the pass in Beijing as long as they stay in the city for more than a year.
