At least seven Russian servicemen were killed and eight wounded Friday, December 8, in a wave of intensified attacks from Chechen rebels.

Two Russian riot policemen were killed and two wounded when their UAZ off-road car hit a mine. In another fight with the Chechen attackers, five more servicemen were killed and six wounded, the Russia federal force headquarters in the North Caucasus said.

In addition, 30 various explosive devices were defused and 24 attacks on federal positions reported Friday, the headquarters added.

The headquarters said rebels have intensified their attacks against the federal side, such as destroying facilities, staging terrorist acts, shooting at roadblocks, and armored and other vehicles, and planting mines in roads and facilities.

More than 50 persons were detained and 42 pieces of arms were confiscated in Friday's mop-up operations and identification checks.

Meanwhile, an arms depot was discovered in Gudermes, an eastern town of Chechnya, and over 70 kilograms of explosives were confiscated in Grozny, capital of the Russian republic, the headquarters added.
