Premier, Vice Premiers Listen to Lecture on Nanometer
The State Steering Group of Science, Technology and Education, headed by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, invited a chief nanometer scientist to give a lecture in Zhongnanhai, seat of the central government, Thursday, December 14.
Bai Chunli, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), made a systematic introduction on the significance of nanometer technology and its development, research fields that are related to nanometers, the prospect of nanometer technology, and policies China should take to deal with nanometer.
Among those in the audience were Zhu Rongji, Vice Premiers Li Lanqing, Qian Qichen, Wu Bangguo, State Councilors Luo Gan, Wu Yi and Wang Zhongyu, and senior officials in charge of State Council departments.
China formed a steering group in June 1998 to lead and coordinate the promotion of China's science, technology and education.
It is expected that nanometer materials and technology will be widely used in areas such as microelectronics, computer manufacturing, medicine, space technology, environment, energy, biotechnology and agriculture.
A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter, and materials smaller than 100 nanometers normally have unexpected, but useful characteristics.
