Five Chinese Ballet Troupes Gathered in Beijing for the Coming Gala

The evening of December 24 will see an outstanding ballet gala at the Great Hall of the People. Named "Power of China Ballet", the performance will demonstrate the top level of Chinese ballet.

Cosponsored by China Performing Arts Agency and Beijing Daily Group, the ballet gala claims to be the largest one since the foundation of the New China (PRC). The largest group of China's best ballet dancers will embroider the highest level performance at the eve of Christmas holiday.

As the new Millennium is just around the corner, the National Ballet of China (formerly known as the Central Ballet of China), Shanghai Ballet, Liaoning Ballet, Tianjin Ballet and Guangzhou Ballet troupes will present their great achievements in the past 40 years in the 150-minute gala. The repertoire includes the Red Attachment of Women, the Yellow River, Moon Reflections in the Fountain, Arabian Nights, etc. What's more, Zhu Yan, Fan Xiaofeng, Sun Shenyi and Guo Fei, the prizewinners in the 19th International Ballet Competition of Varna'98 will represent their outstanding ballet in Don Quixot, Giselle Padd. In particular, the audience may be excited by the 32 swans and 5 pairs of swan prince and princess in the Swan Lake Act II.

Ballet so far has a history of some hundred of years in the world, though experienced just some 40 years in China. Guangzhou Ballet of seven year history is known as the youngest one in China. The past 40 years yielded a lot of repertoire and cultivated a batch of first-class artists. This coming ballet gala is a good opportunity for Chinese ballerinas to exchange, learn and compete with each other, which marks an unified spirit in the ballet art of Chinese characteristics.
