China, Vietnam Initial Agreements on Beibu Gulf Demarcation, Fishery Cooperation

China and Vietnam initialed Sunday, December 24, two agreements on the demarcation of territorial waters, the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, and fishery cooperation in the Beibu Gulf.

Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Vietnamese counterpart Le Cong Phung inked the two documents.

Negotiations between the two countries on the demarcation of territorial waters in the Beibu Gulf have been going on for years.

Chinese and Vietnamese fishermen have a traditional cooperative relationship in the Beibu Gulf, and the fishery arrangement is an important part of the demarcation.

China and Vietnam will officially sign the two agreements Monday when Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong starts his China visit.
