Grand Bashes On In Singapore to Celebrate New Century Advent

Some 130,000 revelers gathered at three grand bashes in Singapore Sunday night to celebrate the advent of the new century.

At Sentosa, the most famous tourist site in the country, some 20,000 revelers hit Siloso beach for an ultimate countdown foam party of the millennium, featuring non-stop music, and the celebration will last to 6 a.m. Monday from 8 p.m. Sunday.

Besides an Olympic-size foam pool for its outrageous soap party, the organizers have lined up the American all-woman band, Sister Sledge, and samba-trotting Brazilian Kuarup Group to keep the rhythm going and the adrenaline flowing through the night.

At the stroke of midnight, some 200 Chinese floating lanterns were released into the sky from Siloso beach.

At the Convention and Exhibition Center of SUNTEC CITY, the biggest street dance party of the year, which is carnival-like, costly and the largest bash in town, was on with more than 80,000 people partying on the roads closed around Suntec's Fountain of Wealth.

Several hundred young kids danced under the spraying water, drenched through and wet from head to feet.

At the Mardi Gras fashion show, dance performers and local artistes were brought in to entertain with their bands. The blast began at 7 p.m. Sunday and will end at 2 a.m. Monday.

The New Year was rung in with fireworks display, showers of confetti and the spray of the fountain jets.

About 30,000 party-goers converged on the whole new world countdown party 2001 taking place at the former National Trades Union Congress resort at Pasir Ris in the Downtown East.

Thailand's pop starlets, China Dolls, Russia's Energy Dancers and America's Ernesta Dunbar, plus a festive light-up gave full play to their abilities on the stage, making the bash have an interesting international flavor.

About 2,000 party packs of toys, snacks and discount vouchers were given away at the party between 7.30 p.m. Sunday and 2 a.m. Monday.
