Hainan to Become Most Prosperous Land in China

Authorities of south China's Hainan Province are determined to build the island into the country's most prosperous region in the new century.

In an interview with reporters, Du Qinglin, secretary of the provincial committee of Communist Party of China, said that as the first step toward that goal, the provincial authorities have set a target in the province's tenth five-year plan (2001-2005) that the province's per capita gross domestic product (GDP) will exceed 10, 000 yuan (US$1,204) in five years, and will be doubled in ten years.

Du said the target is practical, and it also combines improvement of the ecological environment and sustainable development.

Hainan, with its unique rich natural resources, is one of the country's five special economic zones (SEZs). It enjoys preferential treatment in economic development. Last year, Hainan achieved an 8.8 percent increase in GDP.

The party secretary also listed five tasks that have been set to achieve the goal. The tasks are: fostering advantageous and new industries in an effort to adjust industrial structure; enhancing the capacities of scientific and technological innovations; creating conditions to liberate and expand productivity; optimizing factors of production; and making greater progress in urbanization.
