Haiti's Government to Guarantee Aristide's Swearing in

Haitian Prime Minister Jacques Alexis said Thursday that his government will guarantee the swearing in of Jean Aristide, president-elect of the country, scheduled for February 7.

According to press reports reaching here, Alexis said Haiti's authorities were prepared to counter-attack any opposition forces who plan to sabotage the swearing-in ceremony.

Alexis' remarks was a response to the decision of the Democratic Convergence (DC) group, which has brought together about 15 parties to create a parallel coalition government composed of political sectors that did not take part in last November's elections.

Incumbent President Rene Preval, who belongs to Lavalas Party, has also rejected the DC's intentions of blocking the president- elect's assumption of power, and affirmed that any boycott would be a violation of the country's constitution.
