Cote d'Ivoire Brings Attempted Coup Under Control

An attempted coup was under control and the shooting had died down, said Cote d'Ivoire Prime Minister Affi N'guessan Monday.

"It was an attempted coup d'etat. The situation is under control," N'guessan was quoted as saying, adding that only sporadic gun fire was heard. He didn't say who might be behind the coup.

Gun fire and explosions were heard earlier near the state radio and television stations in Abidjan, the commercial capital ofCote d'Ivoire late Sunday.

The West African country was plunged into political turmoil and ethnic chaos for more than one year before the presidential elections last October.
