Ebola Epidemic Close to End in Uganda
Only one new Ebola case has been confirmed with one death in Uganda over the past 16 days, announced the Uganda Health Ministry on Tuesday.
"The new case detected on December 22, 2000 was the last case who already died, and Uganda is expected to announce Ebola free in 42 days after the last death," Sam Okware, Chairman of the National Ebola Task Force, told a press briefing at the ministry's headquarters.
So far 427 cases have been reported with 173 deaths in the country since the epidemic broke out in the northern district of Gulu in September last year, said Okware.
"Despite the absence of new confirmed cases being reported, active case search and contact tracing continue in Gulu district and the western district of Masindi," he said.
Okware added that the public is requested to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
Meanwhile, the Rotary (Foundation) International donated medical equipment and protective gear worth 600,000 U.S. dollars to Uganda on Tuesday.
"The donation will help Uganda eradicate the Ebola epidemic," Vijay Tafwar, the Rotary's District Governor said at the handover ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ugandan Health Ministry.
