Parliamentary Election Campaign in Moldova to Begin on Saturday

The parliamentary election campaign in Moldova will start on Saturday, January 13, when the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) begins registering parties and political blocs participating in the race, CEC Chairman Dumitru Nidelcu announced on Tuesday.

The registration will end on January 25, exactly one month before voting day, said Nidelcu, adding that the campaign will not undergo any substantial changes compared with previous elections.

He did say however that the campaign will take half the usual time, or 45 days instead of the usual 90, because this election is set to be an early one, said Nidelcu.

Accordingly, time for other campaign proceedings including document submission and registration will be cut in half as well.

President Petru Lucinschi issued a decree on December 31 to dismiss the parliament and hold an early election on February 25. The head of state took the action based on the fact that the legislature failed to elect a new president within the time required by law.
