China Unveils 3G Standards

Any game needs rules, so does the race for supremacy in the third generation (3G) technology.

China has set 41 technology standards for 3G communications, according to China's Wireless Telecommunications Standard (CWTS), an organization handling with communication standards in China.

They are in line with three internationally accepted standards approved by International Telecommunication Union. The three standards are: Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA), Code Division Multiple Access 2000 (CDMA2000) and Time Division Syncronous Code Divison Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA).

In a nutshell, 3G is the set of infrastructure and services that will succeed today's 2G systems. It combines high-speed mobile access with Internet Protocol (IP) based services, which promises to bring streaming video and cd-quality music to mobile phones. However, making 3G a reality depends on standards adopted in different areas.

TD-SCDMA, developed by China, is the sole standard in Asia approved by International Telecommunication Union (ITU). WCDMA is mainly adopted in the United States, while CDMA2000 in Europe.

"China may use two standards for 3G," said Sun Lixin, director of Datang Mobile R&D Center, without elaborating.

China Mobile said it is weighing TD-SCDMA and WCDMA standards for it 3G networks construction.
