India Urges WTO to Resolve Uruguay Round Issues Before New Round

The issue of implementation of the existing World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements signed during the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations should be resolved upfront before the launch of any new round, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Murasoli Maran said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Maran conveyed this message to visiting WTO Director General Mike Moore here during a 50-minute meeting, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

Maran also made it clear that non-trade issues should be kept out of the multilateral trade agenda and said that there would be no compromise on the issue of labor standards, the PTI noted.

The efforts of WTO so far for the resolution of implementation issues had been disappointing, Maran told the guest, adding that it would be unfair to impose fresh burdens without implementing the existing commitments.

The minister also reiterated India's commitment to the ongoing mandated negotiations in agriculture and services and the mandated reviews, the PTI added.
