Shanghai to Greet APEC with an Environment-Friendly Image

According to the news from Shanghai environmental protection department, the metropolis will fully display its environment-friendly image to 21 heads of the state, government officials and more than 30,000 personages from foreign lands who are going to attend the 2001 APEC meeting to be held this fall in Shanghai.

To this end, catering, accommodation and necessities for daily use will fully embody the conception of green consumption nowadays in vogue.

In diet, restaurant will be the "green one" with vegetables and meats to be served in "green" or organic during the meeting. No wild games will be served at the table. Natural mineral water will be chosen as drinking water instead of the purified one.

With regard to the accommodation arrangement, guests can enjoy "green rooms" with towels and bed-sheets to be changed according to their needs in order to minimize the pollution incurred from the detergent. Rooms will be supplied and equipped with energy-saving lumps, non-fluorine refrigerator with the bed-sheets, pillowcases and curtains made of ecological-textiles.

Invitation cards, name cards, envelopes, writing paper and files are basically made of recycled paper. All paper can be used double-sided. Audio and illumination equipment should be controlled to a proper volume. Waste paper, battery and the disposable should be recycled.

So far, some leading environmental protection departments in the city have made a list of 44 categories of "green products" labeled with environmental protection marks and some "green products" that are in short supply should be produced as soon as possible.
