Harbin Adds 2,000 Private Companies in 2000
This capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province added 2,60 private companies in 2000, bringing the number of such companies to 14,000.
At the end of 2000, these private companies employed a total of 165,000 people, 27,000 more than at the end of the previous year. Their registered capital totaled 9.5 billion yuan (about US$1.15 billion), a rise of 1.9 billion yuan (around US$229 million).
The number of private companies in the circulation sector fell, while that of processing enterprises rose to a quarter of the total. The city now has 200 private companies in such industries as environmental protection, information, culture and public utilities.
The private sector also took an active part in the restructuring of State-owned Enterprises (SOEs). Some 700 private companies leased or acquired state-owned or collectively-owned enterprises.
