Crew Foil Attempt to Hijack Gulf Air Flight

The crew of a Gulf Air flight from Hong Kong to Abu Dhabi via Bangkok managed to foil an attempt to hijack the plane in mid-air, the official United Arab Emirates news agency WAM reported on Sunday.

WAM, quoting Abu Dhabi television, said the plane made a safe landing at Abu Dhabi airport but that two of the cabin crew had been injured.

A Gulf Air statement said the hijacker was an Iraqi national.

"A Gulf Air Airbus A340 aircraft encountered a failed hijack attempt, when a passenger, an Iraqi national, threatened to hijack the aircraft with a knife in his hand," the statement said.

It said the hijacker attempted to control flight GF 153 from Bangkok to Abu Dhabi with 202 passengers and 14 crew members at 1630 GMT, three hours before its scheduled landing at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

WAM had reported earlier that there were 262 passengers on board.
