Busiest Time Coming for Railways

A flood of 4.1 million travelers are expected to head to major cities after the Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Ministry of Railways officials said as the holiday week concludes, the crush of people will continue into February, with the daily passenger traffic from February 9-12 estimated at 3.7 million at the most, 140,000 more than the same period last year.

According to Monday's China Daily, Beijing now handles 420,000 passengers a day. The Ministry of Railway will put another 130 pairs of trains into operation to meet the influx of passengers.

The 40-day Spring Festival peak transportation period, which started on January 9, is always an annual test for the country's road, railway and air transportation.

After Spring Festival, major destinations of train takers are Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hefei, Chengdu and Wuhan, where most of the transient rural workers swarm in to hunt jobs.
