Mobile services witness booming business

The consumption of mobile services in China has exploded last year, contributing 42 percent to total telecom service revenue, according to a report from the Ministry of Information Industry£¨MII £©.

According to China Daily report, value-added services such as short message and WAP service have caught on in Chinese major cities. In the Spring Festival this year, at their peak, as many as 120 pieces of greetings were sent out a second through short messages.

In the mean time, users of mobile phone has increased to 85 million, half of whom were new customers last year. Figures from MII show mobile services has outgrown fixed-line services for the first time last year. Mobile service added 41 million users, fixed-line 35 million.

Competition between carriers also stimulates consumption, the report said. China Mobile's pre-pay services have secured nearly 20 percent of the mobile market as a whole. The "Ruyitong" pre-pay services also helped boost China Unicom's market share to 22 percent from 15 percent earlier last year.
