Chongqing Unveils Three Gorges Relics Protection Plan

Chongqing Municipality, where the gigantic Three Gorges Power Project is being built, has worked out a plan to protect cultural relics under or above the ground surface.

Under the plan, the municipality will excavate 294 underground cultural relics and relocate 159 scenic and historical sites on the ground in the next two years.

More than 1,000 sites with cultural relics in the dam area has been listed on the state protection plan, which will cost a total investment of one billion yuan.

Over the past four years, archeologists did excavation on 207, 000 square meters of land, worked out relocation plans on 85 sites and relocated one.

It is reported that there are 1,238 places of cultural relics in the Three Gorges area, 845 of which are in Chongqing. Since 1997, 31 excavation teams have gone to the area and they have been working hard to excavate the area before it is inundated when the dam project is completed.
