Orchid in Southwest China City Receives Popularity
Rare varieties of Guizhou-based orchids have attracted flocks of flower fans and botany experts.
The orchids are the focus on the 11th China Orchid Exposition, which is being held in Guiyang, capital of southwest China Guizhou Province.
A local official said the local orchid species won 15 gold medals, half of the total for all exhibits at the exposition, the largest of its kind displaying more than 3,500 pots of orchids of over 100 varieties by domestic and overseas exhibitors.
Domestic and overseas experts are pleased by the fast development of local orchid research and industry. "The outstanding quality and specialty of the rare orchid in Guizhou are the result of efforts by local botanists and anthomania in the field," the experts noted.
An Qichang, a local middle-school teacher, cultivated a butterfly-shaped rare orchid, which has blossomed colorful flowers with 24 petals each.
An overseas business person wanted to purchase this orchid at an incredible price close to 1 million yuan.
Guizhou is one of the country's major production bases for orchids. There are 206 kinds of orchids in 71 categories, 40 percent of China's total.
Guizhou, on the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, with a mild and moist climate, which allow more kinds of orchids to grow. "People worldwide will know more about local orchids through the exhibition," the official added.
