Five Major Projects for Forestry Ecology Launched in Xinjiang

Sources from the Bureau of Forestry of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region say, the local government will lay aside huge sum of capital for the construction of five major forestry and ecological projects in the following ten years. They are:

The first thing is to protect the natural forests in the national forest area in order to recover and develop the resources of natural forest. Secondly, it is to complete the fourth-phase of the project for "Three North" protective forests in some 94 counties and cities of the region to put a gag on desertification and improve the eco-environment in oases. The third target is to return farmland to forest and grassland with a view to make up an area of some three million Mu (one hectare=15mu). But what still remains a major task is the water and soil erosion and weathering in some areas. The fourth is to set up nature reserves for wild animals and plants, build up genome database of rare species, maintain varieties of living creature and protect natural wetlands, etc. The last is to go in for the construction of profit orientated afforestation by planting some quick-growing trees and woods to solve current problem of wood and its products supply and pulp resources.
