New Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway Mapped

The new railway lately declared as the 4th from Guanzhou to Shenzhen has aroused wide interest and discussion among deputies at the ongoing NPC Session.

As planned, the construction will be kicked off this year and completed in two years over a length of 147km. At a cost of 3.6bn yuan, it is to be built by three stages, Guangzhou East-Nangang, Nangang-Dongguan and Dongguan-Shenzhen. The phase one, when completed, is to be linked up with light and suburban railways under planning, then Guangzhou citizens for Whampoa and Nangang can choose trains for outer suburban trips. Phase two is to link Nangang with Dongguan. Phase three will reach Shenzhen from Dongguan and connects a subway scheduled for 2003.

When completed the railway will be able to see a train depart at every 15 minutes and cut to 7 minutes of waiting time. Rush hours will see every 7 minutes a departure.

Feasibility study and construction plan so far have been completed, seven "Blue Arrow" locomotives will be in place in July. No more than 550m A shares will be issued for a fund of 1.98bn yuan to be raised on domestic market, leaving the rest to be filled by ready funds.
