Sri Lankan Prime Minister to Visit Pakistan
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake is due to visit Pakistan on Wednesday to make a last-ditch effort to save ancient Buddha statues in Afghanistan under threat of destruction by the Taliban.
The official Daily News said that Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar who was on a visit to Pakistan informed on Sunday Pakistan's Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf of the intended visit of the prime minister.
During discussions with his Pakistani counterpart, Kadirgamar expressed his country's concern over the decision of Taliban authorities to destroy ancient Buddha statues in the country.
Pakistan has expressed its supported for international efforts to save these statues.
Sri Lanka, a predominantly Buddhist country, is taking steps to prevent Taliban from destroying the ancient Buddha statues in the country.
