Construction of Wenzhou-Fuzhou Railway Launched

March 14 saw an agreement signed by the Ministry of Railways, Zhejiang and Fujian Provincial governments in Beijing to jointly build the Wenzhou-Fuzhou railway, marking the formal start of the construction of the project, say sources from Wenzhou, Zhejiang.

As a part of the coastal railway channel of the national railway network, the 352-kilometer long Wenzhou-Fuzhou railway, of which 97 kilometers are in Wenzhou, will run across the east Fujian Province and coastal regions in south Zhejiang Province. The construction of the railway carries great weight in the utilization of resources, development of maritime economy and local economy and improvement of the railway network along the line in coastal areas..

Although Wenzhou has an advantage of a deep-water port, it has, however for a long time, faced a knotty problem in land transportation. The Jinhua-Wenzhou railway opened to traffic in June 1998 improved part of the traffic situation in Wenzhou only. Highway still remains the only route to the further south, which takes over ten hours to drive to Fuzhou.

In the past five years, Wenzhou has witnessed the fastest development in the traffic construction in history with a total investment of RMB9,290 million yuan.
