Syrian President Meets Iranian FM on Mideast Peace, Bilateral Ties

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad met with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi Tuesday evening on the situation in the Middle East and the Syrian-Iranian ties.

During the meeting, Kharazi delivered to the president a message from his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Khatami, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported, without disclosing the content of the message.

At a press conference upon his arrival at the Damascus International Airport earlier in the day, Kharazi urged the upcoming Arab summit, due on March 27-28 in Amman, Jordan, to adopt a decisive stance towards the current situation in the region and offer support for the Palestinian intifada (uprising) against Israeli occupation.

Iran has a strong strategic relationship with Syria. Assad visited Tehran in January to attend the inauguration ceremony of the first railway line between the two countries via Turkey.

Syria and Iran both support the Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah in its struggle against the Israeli occupation of south Lebanon over the past two decades.

Kharazi arrived here from Beirut, where he met Lebanese President Emile Lahoud.
