President Jiang Zemin Meets Thai FM
President Jiang Zemin said Friday that developing good-neighborly and mutual-trust relationship of all-round cooperation with Thailand is a set policy of China.

In a meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Surakiat Sathirathai, Jiang said that China and Thailand should further their exchange in various areas for more progress in Sino-Thai relations in the 21st century.

Jiang noted that the bilateral ties have kept development momentum at the turn of the century, specifying that leaders of the two countries visited frequently and the mutually beneficial cooperation has been developing smoothly.

The Sino-Thai relationship is a model of good neighborliness and mutual trust, Jiang said, adding that China is willing to work with Thailand for the common prosperity of both countries and peace and development of the region.

Jiang recalled his state visit to Thailand in 1999 and spoke highly of the successful visit by Thai Queen Sirikit on behalf of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in October last year.

He said that Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's study at Beijing University is also a major activity of enhancing the friendship between the two countries, stressing that China appreciates the royal family's efforts in promoting Sino-Thai friendship and welcomes the family members to visit China.

Jiang extended once again congratulations to the newly-formed Thai government and expressed his appreciation of the Thai government's active attitude toward developing friendly relations with China.

China supports Thailand's stand to promote friendly cooperation with its neighbors and to facilitate regional dialogue and cooperation, Jiang said. He added that he believes Thailand will play a positive role for regional peace, stability, and development.

The Chinese president also briefed the Thai foreign minister on China's domestic situation. He pointed out that the more China develops, the bigger contribution China will make to Asia and the world.

In this regard, China has to maintain its stability at home, Jiang stressed.

Statesmen of insight in the world should notice that the big China market will become a real one from a potential one if China develops, and a more developed China contributes more to the world economy, Jiang said.

Surakiat said Thailand has always attached importance to relations with China, adding that the new Thai government under the leadership of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be even more active in promoting friendly cooperation with Asian countries, especially China.

Surakiat said he agreed to Jiang's comments on bilateral ties and believes the Thailand-China relations enjoy broad prospects.

Surakiat said he hopes the two countries will expand their mutually beneficial cooperation and the northern part of Thailand and the southwest part of China will establish ties for barter trade.

He said that Thailand will continue to stick to the one-China policy and wishes the two countries will continue to support and cooperate with each other in international and regional affairs.

Surakiat is here on a four-day working visit, his first China trip since he became foreign minister, invited by his Chinese counterpart Tang Jiaxuan.
