WFP Struggles to Feed 40,000 Refugees

The World Food Program (WFP), the Food Aid Organization of the United Nations, is scouting for 2.6 million U.S. dollars to continue feeding 40,000 refugees fleeing from their war-torn countries, the Times of Zambia reported on Saturday.

Deputy Country Director Jorgen Fanlo was quoted as saying on Friday that all refugee camps in Zambia were facing food shortages and were in dire need of fresh food supplies.

Among the foodstuffs that had run out include beans, cooking oil and maize. Fanlo said the WFP was doing everything possible to ensure that there was sufficient food available to all refugees.

"We hope this problem of shortage of food can come to an end once and for all because the situation if not solved on time might worsen," said Fanlo.

He said the WFP has meanwhile received contributions of food supplies, which would be distributed to all affected areas although they were inadequate.

He called on well wishes to contribute to the food distribution in refugee camps. The most affected area is Kala Camp in northern Zambia's Luapula Province, according to the WFP official.
