Beijing Mayor Meets US Delegation

Beijing Mayor Liu Qi met Monday with a delegation of the American Council of Young Political Leaders.

Liu briefed the delegation on Beijing's urban construction and the city's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

He said Beijing will invest 180 billion yuan (about US$21.7 billion) in the contruction of highways, waste water treatment plants, natural gas pipelines and other infrastructure projects.

The Chinese capital will also pay attention to the development of the information industry and bio-engineering, the mayor told the delegation, that is led by Charles Keiper II.

Keiper said the massive construction of highways and other infrastructure projects makes Beijing look more and more like a metropolis. He added that the citizens' enthusiasm for the Olympic Games can easily be perceived.

The delegation is here as guest of the All-China Youth Federation.
