In the first case in China to involve the protection of Chinese-language domain names, Shenzhen-based Zhongxiang Satellite Network Co. has filed a lawsuit against AEA International Business Networks Ltd. for Chinese-language domain name infringement.

Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court is hearing the case formally. According to the prosecutor, Zhongxiang Satellite Network Co. registered two Chinese domain namesZhongguo Xiangmu Wang and Zhong Xiang Wangwith the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) on Jan. 20, 2000.

The company intended to promote its multimedia and satellite network development efforts on these Web sites.

The suit claims that the defendant allegedly launched its Web site on May 18, 2000, using the name www.SinoProjects.com. (Sino Projects is the English translation of Zhongguo Xiangmu Wang). In addition, the suit claims that the name Zhongguo Xiangmu Wang was used on the SinoProjects Web site. Previously, AEA International Business Networks Ltd. had advertised on Sohu.com, Netease.com, Sina.com and Chinadotcom.
