Shanghai Open Tennis to be Rain-Proof

The Shanghai Heneiken Open tennis tournament, which had been liable to being rained out in all the past three editions, will have a retractable roof against a rain interruption.

The construction of the proof had just started.

The main court of Shanghai-based Xianxia tennis center, home to the US$375,000 event, will be equipped with a 79m-long and 66m-wide roof, which can be unfolded to cover the court and stand during a rainfall.

The light-weight steel roof will make the Shanghai Open one of only six tennis tournaments in the world with a retractable roof.

The event, which is slated for this autumn, had been plagued by competition schedule changes caused by rainy conditions, highlighted by the delay in each final of the past editions to one day later.
