HK is One of Safest Cities in World: Tung

Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world, thanks largely to its efficient, modern and professional police force, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa said Wednesday.

After visiting the North Point Police Station, Tung said "it was encouraging to learn that Hong Kong's crime rate declined by 0.3 percent last year to 1,139 cases per 100,000 of population, which is one of the lowest rates among major cities."

"In 2000, violent crime reports fell by 5.7 percent, with significant falls seen in robbery, wounding and serious assault cases, and the number of homicide cases recorded a significant drop of 31.7 percent, from 63 in 1999 to 43 last year, which is also the lowest figure in 30 years," Tung noted.

Tung also expressed pleasure with the police force's adoption of a comprehensive and proactive strategy in combating juvenile delinquency.

"The multi-agency approach that involves the police, social workers, schools and other interested parties will help ensure a more holistic approach to the provision of services to youths at risk," he said.
