Putin Attends Easter Mass, Praises Orthdox Role in Russian History

President Vladimir Putin took part in a midnight Easter Orthodox mass in Moscow Saturday.

In a special Easter message, Putin told Russian believers: "The Orthodox Church has played a special role in the history of Russia, in the establishment and consolidation of the state."

Putin and his wife Ludmilla attended mass Saturday night at Noscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, celebrated by Patriarch of Moscow and all the Russian, Alexis II.

The president has good relations with the Patriarch, who gave him his special blessing when he was elected president in March last year.
