Leaders of Americas Adopt Plan of Action for Prosperity

The Summit of the Americas officially concluded here Sunday with the adoption of the Declaration and the Plan of Action, and Venezuela reserves its position on the specific wording, in the declaration, on democracy and the time framework to put the proposed free trade area in place.

"We, the democratically elected heads of state and government of the Americas, have met in Quebec City at our Third Summit, to renew our commitment to hemispheric integration and national and collective responsibility for improving the economic well-being and security of our people," the declaration said.

"We have adopted a Plan of Action to strengthen representative democracy, promote good governance and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms," it said.

"We seek to create greater prosperity and expand economic opportunities while fostering social justice and the realization of human potential," it said.

Venezuela reserves its position on the "representative democracy" and the specific time to set in place the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), organizers said
