Wang Wei, Hero of the Era: Commentary

The People's Daily carries a commentator's article Wednesday hailing Chinese pilot Wang Wei as a hero of the era.

The article says that the title "Guardian of Territorial Airspace and Waters" granted to Wang Wei reflects all Chinese officers' and soldiers' iron determination to safeguard the national sovereignty and security, the respect for him from people of all ethnic groups, and firm confidence in the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

The article says that Wang Wei was an outstanding representative of contemporary Chinese military servicemen and servicewomen. He was a model defender who faithfully fulfilled the essential function of the Chinese army. "Wang has composed a patriotic and heroic song with his young life," it adds.

The U.S. government has abused freedom of overflight for years by frequently sending military planes to spy on China, which has done harm to China's national security near the country's coast, despite repeated initiatives for negotiations by the Chinese government and the relevant rules of international law.

The article warns that the U.S. government must recognize the severity of the issue and deal seriously with the stance of the Chinese government and should account for this incident. It says that the US government must stop such spying activities and prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.

People around the world can never relax their vigilance as long as hegemony and power politics exist, it points out.

The article says that the whole Chinese armed forces should learn from Wang Wei, and turn their patriotism into a spirit of working in earnest to make the country powerful.

A country and a nation should be backed by solid national strength in order to safeguard its independence and security, and its position and respect in the world. The article calls upon the whole country to focus on economic development, and comprehensively push forward reform, opening up and the socialist modernization drive.

The article says in conclusion that the Chinese nation is always peace-loving and fearless in the face of great-power threats. The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is an inevitable result of the development of history, it says. It calls on the people throughout the country to rally more closely around the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China with Jiang Zemin at the core, work diligently, make great efforts to build a strong country and create a more splendid future for the Chinese nation.
