Macao Daily News Criticizes Lee Teng-hui's Visits to Japan, US

The visits of Taiwan's Lee Teng-hui to Japan and the United States will cause new troubles for the relations across the Taiwan Straits, between China and Japan, and between China and the United States, noted Friday's Macao Daily News, the most influential newspaper in the special administrative region.

An editorial prominently featured on the newspaper said that Lee, who called himself "seriously sick", is so busy that he will also visit the United States after his Japan trip to build "political ties".

All the people, even including the Japanese and the US governments, must be aware of the fact that Lee is not an " ordinary person", but a political figure, it said, going on to say that Japan and the United States mean to be hard on the Chinese government by granting visas to Lee.

Choosing a time when problems occurred in Sino-Japan and Sino-US relations to pay the visits, Lee Teng-hui is determined to damage the relations across the Taiwan Straits, the paper said.

Another sinister purpose of Lee is to provide a helping hand for Taiwan's current leader Chen Shui-bian to split the motherland, it noted.

Macao Daily News warns the Japanese and US governments not to underestimate the resolve of the Chinese people. "They are asking for trouble if they insist on doing so."

The Taiwan people cherish the current exchanges between Taiwan and the mainland. They will not promise any acts aimed at destroying the relations across the Taiwan Straits, it said.

It is not the right choice for Taiwan leaders to depend on foreign weaponry and play politics, it added.
