UN Peacekeepers Reach Eastern Congolese TownA contingent of 115 Moroccan peacekeepers Saturday arrived in the eastern Congolese town of Goma to join the UN Observer Mission there.This is the second group of U.N. soldiers reaching the town. An initial contingent of over 100 Moroccans had already arrived at the place two days ago. Their arrival completed the deployment of the U.N. observers in territory under the control of the Congolese Rally for Democracy ( RCD) rebels. "We see no obstacle to the arrival of the Moroccan blue helmets in Goma. They are welcome." RCD spokesman Kin Key Mulumba said earlier in the week. Some 3,000 peacekeepers are to be deployed in the Democratic Republic of the Congoto back up about 500 military observers whose job is to monitor a ceasefire assigned in 1999. |
