Eco-environmental Protection in China's Agricultural Production

Intensified efforts to protect the eco-environment in China's countryside have paid off, helping keep a sustained development of the nation's agriculture and rural economy, according to a conference of China's agricultural environmental protection association Tuesday in Xi'an.

The pilot eco-environment projects in 100 counties across the nation have been showing good effects and being expanded in other areas, Zhang Baowen, vice-minister of the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Use of renewable resources and energy such as marsh gas has been increasing in the rural areas. A total of 7.2 million farm households use marsh gas for cooking, which has resulted in a cut of 60 million tons of standard coal, statistics show.

The production area for unpolluted agricultural products has reached 932,000 ha, yielding 10.25 billion tons of unpolluted products, including five billion tons of vegetables, according to statistics.

Prevention of desertification and degeneration of pastures has been successful due to paid use of 130 million ha, or half of the country's total pastures.

Monitoring stations for the agricultural eco-environment amount to 800, and they provide reliable information for government policies on agricultural environmental protection, Zhang said.
