Italian Prisoner Starts Hunger Strike to Obtain Non-smoking Cell

An Italian inmate has begun a hunger strike to obtain a non-smoking cell, arguing that he has "the right to good health inside the prison", according to prison authorities.

The inmate is serving a long sentence at Rovereto prison in northern Italy.

He said he did not intend to "passively suffer the harm of cigarettes".

However, the confined space of the prison made it hard to find a solution to the problem, according to the prison director.
