Former Cult Member Holds Solo Concert

Zhang Qian, a second-year student at the Central Conservatory, played the flute in a solo concert Monday.

The audience found nothing special about the playbill which says that she began learning piano at the age of 6; was enrolled into a primary school attached to the conservatory at 10; entered a middle school attached to the conservatory at 12, and since then she has been studying the flute.

Few know that Zhang is a former follower of the notorious cult, Falun Gong, and a classmate of Chen Guo, 18, who was among the five cult members who set themselves on fire on Tian'anmen Square early this year.

For months, Zhang's teachers and school leaders have tried very hard to help her out of the cult. On March 19, she returned to the conservatory to continue her academic study.

Zhang plans to hold her second solo concert in June.
