Chinese Vice-Premier Meets Brunei Foreign Minister

China attaches importance to the development of good, neighborly friendship and cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries including Brunei, and will make joint efforts with Brunei to continuously push forward bilateral ties.

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen made the remarks Wednesday afternoon in a meeting with Prince Mohamad, foreign minister of Brunei, who is on an official visit to China and who is also scheduled to attend the Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the ASEM ( Asia-Europe Meeting).

Recalling bilateral historical relations, Qian noted that this year sees the 10th anniversary of China-Brunei diplomatic ties, and in the past 10 years there have been many exchanges and contacts between leaders of the two sides.

Meanwhile, the development of bilateral relations has been smooth and bilateral, friendly cooperation in various fields has been continuously expanded, added Qian, voicing satisfaction with the development.

Qian expressed his appreciation for Mohamad's important contributions to the development of bilateral relations in the past years, his admiration for Brunei's unique and constructive role in regional affairs, and his thanks for Brunei's assistance and support for China which this year plays host to APEC (Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation) meetings.

Mohamad said Brunei-China friendship dates back to ancient times and since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1991, bilateral friendly exchanges and cooperation in various fields and at different levels have grown gradually.

Brunei attaches importance to exploring economically cooperative projects with China, hoping that bilateral ties can be strengthened even further in the new century, noted Mohamad.

He also said that Brunei will make every effort to support China as the host to APEC informal leadership meeting.
