Khatami's Campaign Headquarters Set on Fire
Iranian President Mohammad Khatami's campaign headquarters in central Iranian city of Isfahan was set on fire by unknown assailants early Tuesday, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The assailants, riding motorbikes, tore down posters carrying photos of Khatami, sprayed petroleum around the headquarters and set the building on fire, which was brought under control swiftly.
The arsonists fled the scene after cutting off electricity network of the building.
The incident occurred just half a day after the reformist president addressed 30,000 supporters in his first re-election campaign rally in Tehran Monday afternoon, during which Khatami vowed to continue his dedication to reform causes in the Islamic country.
Over the past few days, the campaign headquarters was flooded with threatening phone calls, an unnamed official was quoted as saying.
Khatami won Iran's seventh presidential elections with nearly 70 percent of the popular vote in 1997. He has to compete with nine rivals in the upcoming presidential election this time.
The presidential campaigns started on May 18 and will continue till 08:50 a.m. (0420 GMT) on June 7, 24 hours before voters go to ballot boxes.
