Shanghai Ready for APEC Trade Minister Meeting

Jiang Yiren, vice-mayor of Shanghai, said Saturday that Shanghai is well prepared for the June 6 meeting of trade ministers from member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Speaking at a press conference, Jiang also briefed the media on the massive facelift the port city has received.

He said that road surface of about 100 avenues and streets totaling 1.3 million square meters has been renovated, 2.1 million pots of flowers have been used to decorate the city, and the surfaces of buildings totaling 3 million square meters have been redecorated.

Local residents have been urged since last October to master 100 simple but useful English-language sentences to communicate with overseas guests.

The service industry in the city has also been preparing for the meetings, which include the informal summit meeting in October, said the vice-mayor.
