The Silting Problem of Three Gorges Reservoir Can Hopefully Be Solved

A recent study conducted by Chinese researchers shows that the silting problem in power generation and navigation in the reservoir region can hopefully be resolved.

According to news reports, the average annual bed-load caliber in Yichang section of the Three Gorges reservoir reaches 530 million tons, failing to properly solve such a problem will not only affect the normal display of the reservoir's flood-control and power-generation efficiency and shorten the service life of the reservoir, but can also influence the unimpeded flow of the major Yangtze waterways.

Scientists' research indicates that for the solution of the silting problem in the Three Gorges Reservoir, adoption of the regulating method of "storing clear water and discharging muddy water" with the support of a series of sand-removing measures adopted in the layout of engineering structures and the coordination of proper, auxiliary de-silting ways make it possible to guarantee the display of normal efficiency of the project.

Lin Bingnan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that although the overall level of the world study on silt is not high, China has accumulated some successful experience in the study of silt through the building of the Gezhouba Dam and other pivotal water conservancy projects, Lin and other research fellows are full of confidence in the proper solution of the silting problem facing the Three Gorges Project.
