SCO Benefits Regional Peace and Security: Kyrgyz President

Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev said Friday morning in Shanghai that the newly-established Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will benefit regional peace and security.

When meeting with the press after signing the declaration of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the pact on crackdown on terrorism, separatism and extremism together with Chinese, Russian, Kazakh, Tajik and Uzbek presidents, Akayev said that the deeper cooperation between the six nations will effectively ensure regional stability as well as help shape a new political and economic order in the world.

The pact on fighting the "three evil forces" provides a legal support for Kyrgyz law enforcement departments to crack down on those criminal activities, the president said.

The proposed anti-terrorism center in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan, is expected to coordinate various actions taken by the six nations, he said.

The establishment of the SCO clearly indicates that the six member states commit themselves to promoting world peace and prosperity, he said.
