Ethiopia Ruling Party Favors to Establish Capitalist Economic System

The ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has reaffirmed that its economic objective remains to be the establishment of a capitalist economic system, according to local press reports on Friday.

A spokesperson of the ruling party recalled that it had clearly stated at the EPRDF Congress in Awassa, capital of the Southern National Nationalities People's state in 1995 that the party's objective was to set Ethiopia on a capitalist path.

The spokesperson said that there has not been clarity of view regarding the ruling party's economic policy among members.

The spokesperson made the remarks following a meeting of the EPRDF Council which was started on Monday, and the meeting was reportedly deliberating a series of issues, including the essence of revolutionary democracy, the decadent tendencies manifested in the EPRDF, and the evaluation of the party's performance in the past ten years.

The next agenda for discussion at the on going meeting, according to the spokesperson, will be the political goals of revolutionary democracy.
