Qatar Calls for UN Security Council Meeting on Palestine
Qatar called Saturday on the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in the Palestinian areas, the Qatari News Agency, monitored in Kuwait City, reported.
Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani has sent letters on this issue to the five permanent member states of the UN Security Council, the UN secretary general, and the chairmen of the Non-Aligned Movement and the European Union, the news agency said.
In the letters, Sheikh Hamad, chairman of the 56-member Organization of the Islamic Conference, underlined the need to provide international protection to the Palestinian people in the face of Israeli aggressions.
He also urged the UN to live up to its responsibility for pressuring Israel to halt its aggressions against the Palestinians and implement the relevant UN resolutions to pave the way for a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
In another letter to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the Qatari leader stressed the importance of hold an emergency meeting of the contracting parties of the 1949 Geneva Convention to put an end to the Israeli violation of the treaty.
