Ethiopia's Ruling Party Urges Public to Support Democracy

The ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) Saturday called on the Ethiopian people to support its efforts to tackle the pitfalls threatening the nation's democracy.

In a statement issued here after a 19-day council meeting, the EPRDF said that encouraging results have been registered over the past decade in implementing revolutionary democracy in the country.

It noted that a faction in the party witlessly believed that EPRDF problems originated not from the inside but arose from the outside, saying the faction miscalculated the objective reality of the country and decided to promote dependency, mal-democratic practices and corruption.

The statement called for an all-out fight against narrow- nationalism and arrogant attitude.

It also reassured the appropriate measures taken by the government and the EPRDF to reverse Eritrea's aggression.

It stressed the need for relentless efforts to create a transparent system at all levels in a bid to stamp out corruption from the country.
