University Faculty Urged to Study Jiang's July 1 Speech

Li Lanqing, senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said Monday that university teachers and students across the country should fully understand the significance of President Jiang Zemin's speech on July 1.

Speaking at a discussion organized by the Ministry of Education, Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, called on the teachers and students to consciously assume the historic responsibility of studying and practicing the "three represents".

According to the three represents put forward by Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee on the building of the party in the 21st century, the CPC should always represent the advanced productivity in China, the advanced culture in China and the fundamental interest of the Chinese people.

Li called on the teachers and students to train themselves as pioneers of the country's advanced productivity, further carry forward the advanced culture and safeguard the interest of the general public.

He said implementing the strategy of revitalizing China through science and education and promoting the causes of science and education are an important way of practicing the idea of the three represents.

Among those present at Monday's discussion were Chen Zhili, minister of education, and secretaries of the CPC committees of Beijing University, Qinghua University, Zhejiang University and Sichuan University.
