Beijing Steps up Transportation Network Construction

Since last June a handful of new avenues have been opened to traffic, including the 63.5km Loop Line 4, the 42.6km northern section of Beijing- Kaifeng expressway and the 6.2km Guang'an Street. Other projects that have been started include subway line 5, urban light track, Bawangfen-Tongzhou and parts of loop line 5 and 6.

By now, Beijing has formed world's biggest bus network and China's longest subway line and expressway around the city. The municipal government of Beijing has decided to spend five years in transportation infrastructure construction at a cost of 90bn yuan so as to build up a modernized public expressway network.

In future five years Beijing will spend most government funds on city road rebuilding and construction. The city's total mileage will be extended from current 54km to over 150km, and over 900km highways would be rebuilt or constructed, including 100km loop line 5 (open to traffic in 2003) and 200km loop line 6. A fund of 5.8bn yuan will be injected this year to widen 28 roads for a better transport network.

Meanwhile advanced techniques would be adopted in traffic information, supervision and management system. If any accident occurred on the Loop Line 3 the information would be immediately transmitted to traffic control center via various systems to ensure it is solved quickly.
