Explosion Kills 41, Injures 89 in Shaanxi

An explosion early Monday morning in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province killed 41 and injured 89, leaving a dozen buried underground.

A preliminary investigation by the local government blamed the accident on the private storage of explosives. The suspect proprietor of the explosives moved his unsold explosives to his brother's house in Mafang Village of Hengshan County after his illegal explosive manufacturing plant was closed during a security check campaign in April.

The police are now chasing after the suspect.

Rescue teams, including the provincial governor Cheng Andong and Party secretary Li Jianguo arrived at the village, where more than 140 villagers were affected.

The latest report said that 19 of the 22 seriously wounded people are now out of danger.

Rescue and investigation are still going on.
